A 30-year veteran of the U.S. Department of State, Timothy Towell has played an active role in foreign service activities at home and abroad. After graduating from Yale University in 1957 with a B.A. in Political Science, Timothy Towell served as an aide to then-Governor of Ohio, C. William ONeill. The following year, Timothy Towell joined the U.S. Army for six months of active duty and later enrolled in graduate studies at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1962, Timothy Towell received his M.A. in European History from Case Western Reserve University and would soon embark upon a lengthy career with the U.S. Department of State.
In his first position as a diplomat, Timothy L. Towell worked as U.S. Vice Consul in Valencia, Spain from 1963 to 1965. Remaining in Spain at the end of this period, Timothy L. Towell spent the next two years in Madrid as Special Assistant to the Ambassador. Owing to his proficiency in Spanish and experience in Hispanophone cultures, Timothy L. Towell relocated to Asuncion, Paraguay, in 1967 to serve in a TDY capacity for the American Embassy. From there, Timothy L. Towell went on to the U.S. Consul in Cochabamba, Bolivia; USAID in La Paz, Bolivia; and spent two years as the Bolivian Desk Officer for the U.S. Department of State. In the 1970s, Timothy L. Towell took on a succession of official roles, including Spanish Desk Officer for the Department of State, Political Officer for the U.S. Embassy in Brussels, and Deputy Chief of Mission for the U.S. Interests Section in Havana, Cuba.
After a successful five-year tenure as Deputy Chief of Protocol of the U.S., President George H. W. Bush appointed Timothy Towell U.S. Ambassador to Paraguay a post he held from 1988 to 1991. Timothy L. Towell finished his foreign service career as a Director for Africa in the Peace Corps. Today, Timothy L. Towell serves as President of the Foreign Policy Group.
